• The 18th edition of Mezipatra Queer Film Festival boasts an abundant accompanying program.
  • This year, it will offer two exhibitions, a theatre performance, and discussions and lectures with experts.
  • The festival has also prepared the popular parties for visitors. They include PG-18 party in the Ankali club in Prague, and Sweet 18 party in Brno.

Prague, October 30, 2017 – The 18th edition of Mezipatra cannot take place without the accompanying program. This year, it will include for example a discussion about women in music with DJ Ena Lind from Berlin and her Czech female colleagues, the exclusive premiere of a performance by the ATOM-r collective from Chicago, and a lecture on the queer community's media representation in Russia.

“I am proud of the fact that the accompanying program is growing just like the festival itself. The main news this year is that most Prague events will take place in our newly-opened Patra café,” says Sára Němečková, the festival's accompanying program coordinator. “I am also glad that Ena Lind will not only discuss the situation of women in music, but also star as the headliner of the festival's biggest party, PG-18, in Ankali club.”

Gala evenings and a party with a Berlin legend

The accompanying program in Prague will be launched by the Lather Your Leather opening party, following the premiere of Tom of Finland. Visitors can look forward to their favourite Urxins and Rosier&Chlorophyll. And people can say goodbye in Prague in the family-themed party called We Are Family, with music provided not only by DJs Kaa Glo and Sestry, but also by the festival's program director Sandra Hezinová.

The largest party of Mezipatra, called PG-18, is planned for Saturday, November 4th. The purely female line-up in the industrial Ankali club features DJ Ena Lind from Berlin, and Czech DJs MGDLN, Barbora, and Kierastoboy.

Visitors in Brno can enjoy an opening party as well, directed by Tom of Finland just like in Prague. The evening will also include DJ Martin Hrdina and a performance of the ArtFactory collective dancers.

On November 11, visitors can fondly recollect their teenage years at the Sweet 18 party in Lemon club, where they'll hear the best dance hits from recent years. One day before the festival finishes, the closing gala is planned. The evening will be hosted by Lucie Brychtová and music will be provided by DJ Sestra. And for those more daring among us, there will be also tattoo artist Jako Sen.

Discussions about music, film, or popculture

Lectures and discussion will take place in the festival café Patra. On November 4, visitors can take part in the discussion on Women in Music with Ena Lind and her Czech female colleagues. Hosted by Mary C from Wave radio, the discussion will be in English, with simultaneous interpreting into the sign language.

The following day at 13:00, there will be the popular brunch, followed by a discussion called The Revolution Will Be Genderqueer with the representatives of the Trans*parent organization, starting at 14:00.  They will speak about the relationship of popculture and social changes in the context of “transgender revolution”.

Students of FAMU are returning to Mezipatra after eight years. After the screening of short films centred around queer issues in the Queer as FAMU II block, a discussion with their creators will follow on November 6 at 20:00.

November 7 is reserved for the Struggle for Words lecture by Aleksandr Kondakov, Assistant Professor at European University in St Petersburg, focusing on media discourse in Russia and the role of anti-modernity which turns queer identity into unrealistic phantoms.

November 12 will continue at ArtBar in Brno with Mezipatra Talks about the role of media in creating the image of the LGBTQ+ community. And the discussions will end with Open Space – Queer Gipsy in the Museum of Romani Culture on November 15. The topic will be the situation of the LGBTQ+ community within Romani minority.

A unique performance, queer poetry, and the art of bondage

One of the main allures of the accompanying program in Prague will be the exclusive premiere of Kjell Theøry in Venuše ve Švehlovce on November 7. Chicago company ATOM-r combines Alan Turing's mathematical texts with Guillaume Apollinaire’s hundred-year-old play The Breasts of Tiresias. Mezipatra will present the play in cooperation with Alfréd ve dvoře/Motus.

Mezipatra will also include the exhibition opening of 90 artworks by artists of the Transnational Queer Underground platform, #TheGalleryProject. The exhibition will be displayed from November 1 to 30 in Patra café. And visitors can relax here after the film marathon in three thematic chillout zones. On Friday, November 3, DJ Tytovíš will play cover version of world-famous hits, a set inspired by short films is prepared for Sunday, and Monday is dedicated to the festival team's favourite hits.

The accompanying program in ArtBar in Brno will be launched by an exhibition opening of artists Patrik Kilián, Veronika Šikulová, Lukáš Houdek and Jakub Ra, based on this year's festival motto of Be Your Own Champion. On November 13, the same venue will host an evening of Queer Poetry, with activist Marie Feryna and poet Marek Torčík reciting their work. And the more daring visitors can come one day later to the Art of Bondage with rigger Edna, who will introduce this popular BDSM technique.

Mezipatra do not forget sport fans either. On November 11 in Brno, they can participate in the Warm Up With Running Vol II with ultramarathon runner Linda Beniačová. And on the same day, our single visitors can come to the popular Speed dating in metro-bar.cz. And the last accompanying event of dance Waack workshop takes place in Mosilana Hub on November 17.
