The Hanging Garden

Retrospective: The Dark Kingdom

No one in the family has heard from William for ten years - since he disappeared with a goodbye note. Now his sister is getting married and William shows up among the wedding guests without a word of explanation. The dark family past meets a charged present and all the threads converge on William - now a handsome young man living a content life far away in the city, but formerly an obese traumatized teenager, whose secrets are resurfacing after ten years with a destructive force. Gallows humor told through gritted teeth in conversation, decadent poetry about the wild growing garden then and now, time planes finally coming together in a turbulent history of a fatally dysfunctional family, all concentrated in the single event of a wedding reception gone awry. And there is the shadow and breaking point of the hanged body in the garden’s corner. This brilliantly acted, cruel and beautiful character study was directed by Thom Fitzgerald, Mezipatra’s special guest in Prague.
