Kiss of the Spider Woman

Retrospective

Imprisoned under the rule of Brazilian military junta, the revolutionary Valentin, and Molina, jailed for sex with a man, find themselves in one cell. Molina is forced by the jailers to pry secret information about resistance activities out of Valentin, and the other man, scarred by torture, has only contempt for his cellmate at first. Gradually, they become closer, and Molina leads Valentin out of the dark cell and into his rich fantasy world inhabited by the characters of his beloved melodramatic films, which is governed by the enigmatic Spider Woman. Their friendship evolves and the two vastly different men transform too when the possibility to reciprocate love and the inevitability of treachery (under the regime's pressure in the jail as well as outside its gates) enter their shared microcosmos. The year 2015 celebrates the 30th anniversary of this already classical romantic drama about the faces of love and the very first film to receive an Oscar for an actor portraying a homosexual character (William Hurt as Molina).
