Growing Up Coy

Documentary
If your child was bullied at school, what would you be willing to do to find justice? Coy can't go to the bathroom with other kids; she is only allowed to use the bathrooms reserved for teachers. The reason is that she was born a boy, and some parents perceive such a girl as a threat to their six-year-old daughters. Coy's parents don't want their daughter to be excluded, so they have come to a difficult decision: they will sue the school. The first lawsuit of this kind launches a sensationalist wave of media interest from all over the world as well as an avalanche of hateful comments against the parents who are letting their little child fulfil her gender identification. The documentary follows the family from the lawsuit preparations to its climax and observes the toll it takes on the parents' relationship. The timing of the film's premiere corresponds with attempts of some southern states in the USA to push through legislation against the rights of trans* people.
