Strawberry and Chocolate / Fresa y chocolate

Retrospective

While Diego, a nationalistically oriented student of the political sciences, is a devout supporter of Fidel Castro, the regime's opponent, David, has lost all illusions and longs for emigration. When a coincidence brings them together, it forces the question whether they may even find some common ground. Despite initial prejudices and unease, Diego finds a way to the temperamental art enthusiast and also opens his heart to his friend, the former prostitute Nancy. Amidst the protagonists' clashes of political views and beliefs, an unusual and strong friendship gradually begins to form. The iconic Cuban film, based on Senel Paz's short story The Wolf, The Forest and the New Man, was nominated for the Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film in 1994. Despite the theme of homosexuality being absolutely taboo in local production at that time, the film is one of the most commercially successful of Cuban cinema.
