Abu

Documentary
Complicated family relationships are a popular topic for documentary filmmakers. Yet the creators of Abu delve into their own family drama with unusually rawness and emotional intensity and share it with humour and lightness. They tell the story of a family that decided to emigrate from Pakistan to Ontario, Canada. It offers a fragmented portrait of a young man discovering his sexuality and
finding a way to his own father through materials found on old VHS cassettes, archive photos, animations, music videos and scenes from Bollywood films. An effortlessly narrated story about searching for family ties and inner integrity while clashing with the opinions of a conservative society, xenophobia and gender prejudices. Abu is above all an enchanting film about the importance of forgiveness.
