Sally!

Documentary Section

Queer history is written by white gay men. That’s also why some of the words of the American activist Sally Gearhart were attributed to Harvey Milk. But he was far from the only one who left an impressive mark on the fight for queer equality. Gearhart, a professor, fantasy writer and an icon of radical feminism, played a crucial role in promoting rights of millions of (not only) lesbian women in the 1970s and 1980s. The award-winning documentary shows Sally as a charismatic speaker, but also as a friend, girlfriend, lover, and a champion of personal and social happiness. It avoids boundless admiration and emphasis on an individual’s accomplishments. On the contrary, it explores Sally’s contradictions and the complex role of those who lead social movements – which are usually multilayered and communal.
