Step by Step b2b Vutru are the very first stars of our music program. Step by Step graced the skies of Mezipatra’s parties many times before, putting smiles on our faces and getting our feet and other body parts moving. After a couple of years, she’s back – joined by VuTru, another recognizable name of the scene, with a mix of disco, electro, pop, and many other sweet dreams to kick off the festival.

For a long time, queer characters on screen rarely got a happy ending. The pattern even has a name: "Bury Your Gays". Even in the 2000s, queer characters in film were still more likely to die than to live. Games often took a different road, letting players shape their own relationships and identities. Kasia Władyka, Expert Quest Designer at Elsewhere Entertainment (The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077), and Marek Čermák, film director and Lead Narrative Designer at Warhorse Studios (Kingdom Come: Deliverance II), will explore how queer representation in games has evolved, how it compares to film, and what changes when the audience holds the controller. OUTPITCH returns to Mezipatra for its second public pitching event, where emerging filmmakers from the V4 countries and Ukraine will present their upcoming projects. What makes horror queer, and why do queer experiences and horror so often go hand in hand? Culture writer Jája Staněk and Refresher.cz editor Timon Láska will trace queer horror through literature and film. While Jája will approach the topic mainly through literature, Timon will bring a film perspective. Together, they’ll explore the genre’s history, the changes in LGBTQ+ characters, contemporary works, and horror as a space for otherness and queer experience. The event is in English.

How is queer cinema faring in Taiwan, one of Asia’s most LGBTQ+-friendly societies despite its proximity to China? The creators of two very different films presented at the Berlinale – the romantic neo-noir Silent Sparks (Yu Yu Huang) and the wild political satire The Trio Hall (Su Hui-Yu) – will introduce contemporary Taiwanese queer cinema, its place in the region, and the space for artistic freedom. This is also how Czech members of the Parliament speak. But homophobic rhetoric doesn’t stay behind the parliamentary lectern. It’s gaining ground in political movements, the media, and public space at large. How far is society’s radicalisation towards LGBTQ+ people going? Are the ones protesting loudest the guilty ones – gay politicians still in the closet? And is it a good thing that we’ve grown used to feeling safe in our social bubbles, or are we watching them burst in real time? Join us for an evening with Debate for Puppets, featuring anonymous panellists discussing the rise of hate speech against the LGBTQ+ community.

This morning edition of Debate for Puppets opens up LGBTQ+ topics for a high-school audience. In this unique discussion format, guests speak anonymously through puppets and reveal their identities only at the end, creating space for open dialogue without prejudice. What support can queer students find at school? What roles do teachers, school counsellors and prevention specialists play? And how can schools support coming out and respect for diversity? The audience will have the chance to ask these and other questions, too. An interactive educational session follows the discussion. The debate will be held in Czech.

How does addiction affect a relationship and the trust between partners? Martin and Zdeněk have been together for 20 years. Over that time, they have shared many wonderful moments, as well as periods that have put their relationship to the test. They will talk about addiction, relapses, mutual support, and the search for a balance between being together and staying true to yourself. The discussion will also feature the professional perspective of therapist Jan Valer and will be moderated by Teodor Červenka. The perfect welcome drink for an autumn mood, bangers everyone can relate to, and dancing till dawn! After the screening of Gugu’s World, we won’t be heading from Cinema Art to the foyer of Cinema Scala as we used to. Instead, we’re taking the party to ArtBar on Štefánikova Street, where the main stage will be set on fire by the excellent DJ Current State, who regularly entertains Olomouc audiences for instance at AFO festival, DJ Joshek, a club veteran and the spirit of the Rosnička festival who has shared the stage with the likes of Ventolin and MIDI LIDI, as well as by DJ Máúcta, the co-founder of Brno’s underground dance scene Fungus Collective. Why do queer audiences so often identify with horror antagonists and iconic “final girls”? And why do they feel so at home in a genre built on fear? In this talk, Klára Feikusová from Palacký University Olomouc’s Department of Theatre and Film Studies will explore the queer community’s relationship with horror, illustrating the phenomenon through familiar characters – from Carrie to the Babadook and to drag queens. We’ll look at it through the lenses of both film theory and psychology. The lecture will be followed by a screening of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. The lecture will be held in Czech.

Shibari is the Japanese art of rope bondage, combining aesthetics, technique, trust, and emotional connection. What does bias-motivated violence look like? Can it take the form of verbal abuse and insults, blackmail, threats, sexual assault, or physical violence? Hate crime can have a profound impact on the lives and safety of queer people. This practical lecture, led by experts from the organization In IUSTITIA, will explore the different forms bias-motivated violence can take and the specific legal tools and protections available to victims and witnesses under Czech law. As part of Mezipatra, we’ll screen Different from the Others (1919), a film that survives only as a fragment (50 minutes). In the history of world cinema, it is the first film to feature a gay man as its central character. In the spirit of awareness-raising fiction films of its era, known as Aufklärungsfilme, director Richard Oswald tackled this taboo subject with utmost restraint. Even so, the film provoked outrage and calls for censorship. The screening is presented in collaboration with Cinema Art as part of the HUSH Cykle: Silent Film Nights, a series that pairs silent films with live music in unusual venues around Brno.
