But I'm a Cheerleader

Retrospective

A horrified family, disappointed friends – why? Seventeen-year-old Megan is a vegetarian, and all her role models are women. This can mean only one thing: although she’s the football team’s cheerleader, Megan must be a lesbian! But help is on the way… A conversion camp led by a seemingly likable proponent of traditional values, offering five simple steps toward a “straight” life. At first, the film flirts with social satire, but it soon evolves into an explosive – and sometimes romantic – comedy. This amusing story of a center that tries to “cure” youth led astray by homosexuality as if it were drug addiction is director Jamie Babbit’s way of dealing with prejudice and rigid social roles. The message is clear: be honest with yourself and with others. The superb cast features stars of American independent (queer) cinema: Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, Michelle Williams, and RuPaul as the coach.
