An experimental queer musical set in a women’s prison, where former inmates perform alongside professional actresses in a provocative play on freedom, the body, and desire. The film breaks down the boundaries between reality and fiction, as well as between documentary and fantasy. In cinemas from September 5, 2025.
Synopsis
What is life like for women who have been through prison? And what happens when grey prison cells turn into a stage? Award-winning Argentine director Lola Arias transforms the setting of a correctional facility into a dazzling musical, where dance numbers intertwine with the real-life stories of inmates. In vibrant scenes, themes of confinement, queer identity, motherhood, and solidarity emerge. The film becomes a collective ritual in which women reclaim the power to tell their own stories – and in doing so, reshape their image in society.
Reas premiered at Berlinale 2024, where it stood out as a unique contribution blending documentary, musical, and queer experiment.
