Laurence Anyways

International Feature Film Competition

Xavier Dolan’s Heartbeats (Les amours imaginaires) charmed the film world including the Czech audience (local theatrical distribution was launched on the closing night of Mezipatra 2010), although, for the author, it was only a small "in-between" project in the year-long preparation of his grandiose opus Laurence Anyways – awarded a special Palm for the best queer film at Cannes Film Festival. In this film, we follow the main protagonist Laurence, portrayed by the French actor Melvil Poupaud, over the period of ten years of his revolutionary personal "transformation" – Laurence finally decides to live as the woman he always felt he was. He confides in his girlfriend Fred – for her portrayal of a woman in love writhing in the agony of an unimaginable situation, Suzanne Clément won the Best Actress Award in the Cannes' section Un Certain Regard. An ultimate love story unfolds in slow motion, emotionally driven scenes with crisp dialogue exquisite colors and striking compositions, accompanied by the "Best of the 90s" soundtrack.
