Being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender in Uganda during the 3rd millenium is a life-risking situation. Local religious leaders, inspired by American evangelists, instigate hysterical hatred and initate a parliamentary bill that would allow the death penalty for homosexuality and imprisonement for those, including doctors and family, who do not report it. The documentary follows the rising star of LGBT activism, David Kato, who dares to publicly protest in this escalated atmosphere. Kato and a handful of supporters sue the local tabloid, which forcefully outs gays while pushing for their execution; they fight for the rights of those HIV positive; and they alert the public about the “curing” rape of lesbian women by their relatives. Kato manages to point out the state-enforced homophobia to international news media as well as to the UN. During the year-long shooting of the film, Kato is brutally murdered, which shakes the local community and provokes a strong reaction from the rest of the world. A luta continua.
