It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse, But the Society in Which He Lives / Nicht der Homosexuelle ist pervers, sondern die Situation, in der er lebt

Retrospective

When a boy from a small town travels to a modern metropolis, he expects, a bit naively, only the best from the journey. But reality soon slaps him in the face when he’s disappointed by his rich lover for the first time. Even his escape to a hip café doesn’t change his disappointment, and the only intimacy he can find is at the public toilets. This film survey of the gay community in 1970s Berlin goes deeper than the attractive surface of queer subculture and shows both the nice facade and the darker side of a group that still hadn’t won its voice. In a subversive manner, Rosa von Praunheim plays with stereotypes as a political weapon against the ignorance of both the majority society and the homosexual community.
