Something Must Break / Nånting Måste Gå Sönder

International Feature Film Competition

In his feature debut, Ester Martin Bergsmark (“She Male Snails” - Special Mention of QFF Mezipatra Jury 2012) elaborates on the topic of blurring boundaries in our perception of gender identity, and tells the story of a fatal love clashing with these boundaries; presented in a uniquely visual style. Sebastian is not happy with his body. He wants to abuse his body, and enable his beautiful “dream sister” Ellen to rise from its remnants. Alluring and punk Andreas appears in his life one summer day. Together, they fight the boredom of living in Stockholm. It's not an issue for them to get a beer or a new dress for a party in a way that is less than conventional. Sebastian is sure that he belongs with Andreas. But the punk is not gay, and it doesn't come easy for him to understand the presence of Ellie. The curious romance in a world full of disillusionment was awarded the main prize, the Tiger Award, at this year's IFF Rotterdam.
