The Hunger

Retrospective: Only Lovers Left Alive

Miriam Blaylock (Catherine Deneuve) is stunning, sophisticated and charming. But she's also a several-centuries-old vampiric femme fatale. With her current husband John (David Bowie), they live their “together forever” in a fashionable New York district where their neighbours know them only as a loving couple who earn their living as music teachers. Yet Miriam and John wake up every night to find new victims in night clubs and quench their thirst for life eternal with their blood. Their routine of blood, murders and violoncello playing is disrupted by John's unexpected ageing.  John contacts doctor Sarah (Susan Sarandon) in an attempt to stop the destructive disease. For her, John is an unprecedented medical case, but while trying to help him she succumbs to the fatal charm of Miriam who is looking for a new vampire queen as John's death is imminently approaching. Tony Scott's original horror is a classic of queer cinema, unforgettable not only for its superstar cast, but also for one of the most sensual lesbian scenes in film history.
